Orthodontic Treatment in Singapore

Thoughtfully planned care for braces, aligners, jaw correction, and smile refinement

Orthodontic treatment is not just about straightening teeth. It involves understanding how the teeth, jaws, and facial structure work together, and planning treatment that is functional, stable, and supportive of long-term aesthetic outcomes.

At Family Dental Surgery, orthodontic care is provided by Dr Darren Tan, with a focus on individualised treatment planning and well-balanced, predictable results.

About Your Orthodontic Care

Orthodontic treatment at Family Dental Surgery is led by Dr Darren Tan, who has completed a Master of Dental Surgery (Orthodontics) with distinction from the National University of Singapore.

Dr Darren manages a wide range of cases, from straightforward alignment to more complex bite and jaw-related conditions, including cases requiring coordination with oral and maxillofacial surgeons. For cases requiring surgical correction, Dr Tan works closely with oral and maxillofacial surgeons in both government and private hospitals, ensuring coordinated and well-structured care.

In addition to orthodontics, Dr Tan has a strong interest in aesthetic and restorative dentistry, and is actively involved in continuing education and advanced training in this area. This includes a structured three-year programme in aesthetic dentistry with King’s College London. This allows treatment planning to consider not just alignment, but also tooth proportions, smile balance, and overall aesthetic outcomes.

Our Approach to Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment is planned with a focus on precision, timing, and long-term stability, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Individualised Treatment Planning

Each case is assessed based on bite, jaw relationship, dental development, and aesthetic goals. The choice between braces, aligners, or other approaches is made based on what is most appropriate for the case.

Comprehensive Treatment Scope

We manage a range of orthodontic needs, including:

  • alignment and spacing issues

  • growth-related problems in children

  • expansion and space management

  • impacted teeth

  • jaw discrepancies requiring surgical planning

A Foundation-First Approach to Aesthetic Dentistry

Orthodontic treatment is often the foundation for achieving long-term, natural-looking results.

Dr Darren Tan adopts a treatment planning approach where tooth position is first optimised, allowing any future aesthetic or restorative work to be carried out in a more conservative and minimally invasive way.

When teeth are properly aligned within the jaws:

  • less removal of natural tooth structure may be required

  • restorations can be designed more predictably

  • long-term stability and function are improved

In selected cases, particularly where there are underlying jaw discrepancies, orthognathic (jaw) surgery may also be considered as part of comprehensive treatment planning.

This approach focuses on achieving outcomes that are not just straight, but biologically sound, structurally stable, and aesthetically balanced.
