Mini-Screw Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE) or Mini-Screw Assisted Slow Palatal Expansion (MASPE)

A modern, non-surgical approach to widening the upper jaw in teenagers and adults

What is MARPE/MASPE?

MARPE/MASPE is an advanced orthodontic technique that widens a narrow upper jaw using an expander supported by small temporary miniscrews placed in the palate. This is often an adjunct procedure to orthodontic treatment with either braces or aligners.

Unlike traditional expanders that rely mainly on teeth, the mini-screws allows forces to be focused on the palate which is especially important in older patients where the sutures are increasingly interdigitated.

In selected cases, MARPE/MASPE offers a less invasive alternative to surgical-assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE), as it is performed without jaw surgery and is typically carried out within the dental clinic setting. This can reduce treatment complexity while still achieving meaningful skeletal expansion.

Why might expansion be needed?

Expansion may be indicated when the upper jaw is narrow and does not align well with the lower jaw. This can present as crossbites and contribute to limited space for the teeth.

By widening the upper jaw, expansion can normalise the transverse jaw relationship and potentially help create additional space for crowded teeth and, in some cases, may provide functional benefits such as improved nasal airflow.

MARPE/MASPE in
        Family Dental Surgery

MARPE / MASPE in Family Dental Surgery is carefully planned and fabricated through an advanced fully digital in-house workflow, with no part of the process having to be outsourced to an external dental laboratory. From planning to appliance fabrication, the entire process is overseen by our dentists to ensure accuracy and consistency.

What is the treatment process like?

The process is carefully planned and carried out in stages to ensure safe and predictable results. Every step is guided and monitored closely by your dentist.

Every patient’s treatment journey is slightly different. We’ll guide you through each step and ensure you feel comfortable and informed throughout the process.

1. Assessment & Imaging

Your journey begins with a detailed consultation. We assess your teeth, jaw structure, and overall suitability for mini-screw assisted expansion using clinical examination and digital imaging.

2. Treatment Planning

If expansion is suitable for you, a personalised treatment plan will be created. This includes designing the appliance and planning how your jaw will be gradually expanded.

3. Appliance Placement

The appliance is fitted securely in your upper jaw. This is a precise procedure carried out with care to ensure comfort and stability. Most patients adapt quickly to the appliance, and we’ll guide you on how to manage it comfortably at home.

4. Gradual Expansion Phase

You will gently activate the appliance over time, allowing the upper jaw to expand gradually. This process is controlled and monitored during regular follow-up visits.

5. Stabilisation Phase

Once the desired expansion is achieved, the appliance remains in place for a period of time to allow the bone to stabilise.

6. Orthodontic Treatment

After expansion, braces or aligners are typically used to align the teeth and refine your bite for the best overall result.
